Nelson was born March 15, 1947, the second son to Hans Christian Marinus Miller and Ilene Ruth Paege in Ottumwa, IA. To this union, three sons were born, Michael Reed, Nelson Larry and Gary Lee. Hans Miller died early in life, and Ilene married Emery Worrell Junior of Wisner, NE, and to this union, a son Rodney Brian Worrell was born.
Nelson attended Wisner Elementary school and graduated from Wisner High School in 1964. He attended two years of college at Wayne State before joining the United States Army in 1966. While in the service, Nelson was attached to the Korea Military Advisory Group and served with the US Army Intelligence Corp. He was honorably discharged in May of 1969.
Nelson returned to the Midwest and started working in the newspaper business, and began managing the Gregory Times-Advocate, which he then purchased several years later. On August 2, 1974, he was united in marriage to Sally Ann Moses of Winner, SD at the Union Congregational Church in Gregory, SD.
To this union two daughters were born, Sara Ann and Sonya Marie. During this time, Nelson and Sally also continued to expand the newspaper business to include the Edgemont Herald Tribune, Ainsworth Star-Journal, Valentine Midland News, Wagner Printing and Plains Printing Company. When the girls were growing up, everyone worked in the family business.
On September 18, 1997, Nelson was given the gift of life through a heart transplant at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Jacob Clay Sutton, at 16 years old, had made his wishes known to his mother that he wished to be an organ and tissue donor. Less than a year later, Jacob died in a tragic automobile accident and she carried out his wishes. Through his gift, the Miller family was extended to include Connie and Al Wroblewski, Clay and Gail Thomason, Marjorie and Carol Gustafson, Jason and Christy Sutton and a host of other family and friends.
Nelson was passionate about his family and friends, his work and his community. He worked hard but also took time to play. Spending time vacationing, hunting and fishing, and just being present with his loved ones were some of life’s greatest moments.
Nelson served on the Gregory BID Group, Gregory Athletics Club, Gregory Rotary Club, Gregory Commercial Club, Gregory Community Players, Masonic Lodge, Order of Eastern Star, one of the founding members of the Dakota Action Rocket, founded the Great Plains Pioneer, now Pioneer Advertiser, and Past President of the South Dakota Newspaper Association.
