Brown County Commissioners Delay Decision on Swine Facility Expansion

The Brown County Commissioners decided to table their decision on the expansion of a swine facility north of Ainsworth during their meeting on Tuesday, October 3rd.

Commissioners Buddy Small, Les Waits and Reagan Wiebelhaus opened the floor for further public comment after announcing they wouldn’t make a decision during the meeting. During the previous meeting and public hearing on Tuesday, September 19th, the Commissioners said they would not allow public comments during the October 3rd meeting, but that they would announce their decision on that date.

Wiebalhaus said they were choosing to forego a vote at the present time in order to wait for a ruling from the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), which is expected to come 10-14 days after the public comment period ended on Monday, October 2nd. Small also said Brown County Attorney David Streich asked the Commissioners not to make a decision until he could speak with the National Association of Counties (NaCo) and the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association (NIRMA).

No set date was given for when the Commissioners will make their final decision.
