Funeral services for Ferne Bartling were held Monday, October 8, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Burke with Pastor David Schmidt officiating.
Music was provided by Kelly Schmidt, organist. Barb Drees and Sherry Bartling were in charge of registration and Mary Lou Bohnet was flower attendant.
Casket bearers were Tom Bohnet, Don Bohnet, Craig Wischmann, Ed Bartling, Bart Bartling and Rich Bartling.
Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery in Burke. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ferne Esther Bohnet Bartling was born January 15, 1927 to her parents Mary (Frey) Bohnet and Samuel Bohnet. She was the twelfth of fourteen children. Ferne grew up in the Burke community and went to rural school for seven years and Burke school for five years.
After graduating from high school, she worked in the Clerk of Courts office and also in the ASCS office, then known as the Commodity Credit Corporation and continued to work there for a number of years after marriage. Ferne did the bookwork for Lloyd’s business; she also worked at the Parkside Motel and the Ben Franklin store both in Gregory.
Ferne was united in marriage to Lloyd Bartling on November 11, 1949. To this union, three children were born: Steven Ray, Bradley L. and Tracy Jo. Her hobbies were sewing, quilting, reading, and gardening.
Ferne was a life-long member of the Grace Lutheran Church.
Ferne passed away at the Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Sioux Falls on October 3, 2018 at the age of 91.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; her parents, seven brothers and spouses: J. R.(Jack) Bohnet and wife Viola, Leon (Curly) Bohnet and wife Janet, Phil Bohnet and wife Shirley, Louie Bohnet and wife Edna, Herbert Bohnet, Adrian (Eddie) Bohnet, and Richard Bohnet, four sisters and spouses, Alma Thompson and husband Denzel, Ruth Wischmann and husband Werner, Edna Duerfeldt and husband Vern, and Bette Pierce, and one grandson, Blake Bartling.
Ferne is survived by her two sons, Steve of Gregory and Brad and wife, Missy, of Mission; one daughter Tracy and husband, Greg Buthe, of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Derek Buthe and wife, Christa, of Gettysburg, Jamie Buthe of Sioux Falls, and Justin Bartling and Shelby, of Gregory; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Bresee of York, NE, and Emma Heermann of Modesto, CA; two brothers-in-law, Earl Pierce, Callaway, NE and Alvin Bartling, Burke; and many nieces and nephews.
