Funeral services for George Brooks were held on Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gregory with Father Jonathan Dillon officiating.
Music was provided by the congregation accompanied by Mary Beth Gergen, pianist.
Lector was Steve McCance, altar servers were Kade Stukel and Luke Stukel. Gift bearers were Tianna Brooks and Riley Brooks. Marvin Gies was in charge of registration.
Casket bearers were Zachery Barber, Canning Barber, Ty Warkenthien, Evan Warkenthien, Mason Brooks and Braxton Brooks. Honorary casket bearers were the Knights of Columbus.
Interment was in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Gregory, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.
George was born on September 19, 1939, to Marvin Edward and Alice Irma Brooks in New Underwood, SD. He was the middle child of five sons born to the couple, Arlie, Darral, George, Dale, and Gary.
George grew up in Philip, SD where he graduated from high school in 1958 and went on to college at Huron College where he played football and studied for five years. He graduated with his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. During his time at Huron College, he met Deanna Jean Willman. They were married on June 16, 1962, in Wessington Springs, SD. George and Deanna had five children, Brett, Craig, Brad, Kevin, and Dustin.
George’s careers included teaching for over ten years, coaching most of his adult life, driving truck, and farming/ranching on the family ranch for over twenty-three years with his brothers.
George’s hobbies included traveling, camping, boating, coaching youth in both wrestling and baseball, and fixing up old camping trailers. Family was everything to George and he loved to spend time with them at sporting events, river boating, and camping.
George’s wife, Deanna, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and now is a resident of Avera Rosebud County Care Center. They were married for 57 years at the time of George’s passing.
He passed away in his sleep in the early morning hours of Friday, July 26, 2019, in Gregory, SD.
George is preceded in death by his parents Marvin and Alice Brooks and his brother Arlie.
He was survived by his wife, Deanna Brooks; his children and their families, Brett and Kay Brooks; Craig and Patty Brooks and their four children, Zachery, Channing, Ty and Evan; Brad and Laurel Brooks and their children Riley and Mason; Kevin Brooks and his children Tianna, Brooklyn and Braxton; Dustin and Jennifer Brooks; his brothers Darral, Dale, and Gary, and numerous nieces and nephews.
