Funeral services for Ionia Klein were held on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory with Pastor Scott McClellen officiating. Ashley Klinger was in charge of registration.
Casket bearers were Jeffy Smith, Jake Rinker, Cody Rinker, Noah Rinker, Alex Week and Alex Schaeffer.
Interment was in the Winner City Cemetery in Winner, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ionia Faye Smith was born September 22, 1958, to Darrell and Donna Smith in Faith, SD. She was the eldest of six children. Ionia attended Kofa High School in Yuma, AZ. She also attended ROTC (Reserve Officer’s Training Corps).
Ionia met and married Mike McGuire in 1976 and they had three children, Michael, Michelle, and Melissa. Ionia moved to South Dakota in 1980 where she met Robert “Bob” Klein in 1982. Ionia and Bob were married in the fall of 1985 in Pierre, SD, and had one child, Robert Matthew Klein. The family then moved to Dallas, SD, in 1988.
Ionia worked various jobs including: Corner Café, Mr. G’s, and Klein’s True Value/Greenhouse. In 1992 Ionia and Bob moved south of Gregory to a farm. Ionia was big into planting flowers and gardening. She had many hobbies that included ceramics, wedding planning, sewing, crafts, genealogy, and helping with the yearly haunted house. Halloween was her favorite holiday.
Every summer she would take her four grandchildren and four nephews on vacation to various places. She enjoyed traveling and working at Klein’s Greenhouse before her health started to decline in 2011.
Ionia passed away on Friday, August 2, 2019, at the Avera Gregory Hospital at the age of 60.
Ionia was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Jim and Joe, and step-daughter Heather.
She is survived by her husband Bob Klein, and four children: Michael (Selena) of Minnesota, Michelle (Bobby) of Winner, Melissa (Wayne) of Gregory, and Matthew (Amanda) of Mitchell, SD, four grandchildren, Kayla and Kenzie Bachmann, Tyler Brunmeier, and Ellie Jo Cole, six step-grandchildren: Alaina Sechler, Natalie, Teah, and Dylan Fiebelkorn, Alex and Payton Week, two sisters Sherry (Bill) and Kay (Curt), one brother Jeff Smith, and one half-brother Kenneth Nightpipe and many nieces and nephews.
