Trip to Ethiopia changes perspectives of two local men
Burke High School senior Allie Stangle and his pastor Russ Grim and several others from a church in Chicago got onto a plane in Chicago on December 13, 2019, and stepped off into a whole different world 14 hours later in Ethiopia.
Because their plane arrived an hour early, the travelers spent the time roaming the streets of Addis Abab until their rides showed up. Once they started driving up into the mountains, Stangel described the terrain as “like the Black Hills with no trees.” It was hilly, rocky, and dry. They were there during the dry season, but empty canals alongside the road to direct water were evidence of heavy rains other times of the year.
The mountain roads were treacherous, adding hours to their trip. Gravel, potholes, and no guardrails made for a very scary drive as they wound their way up to the village.
