Deer hunt provides opportunity for first-time youth hunters

Ask almost any hunter about their first deer hunt, and you will probably hear about the excitement of spotting an animal in their sights and hitting their mark. They can probably remember what kind of day it was, who was with them, and how it felt to harvest their first deer.

Unfortunately many kids don’t get to have that experience because they don’t have anyone who can give them the opportunity and guidance. That’s where Youth Deer Hunts come in. Organized by South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks, these hunts are free and open to first-time youth deer hunters ages 10-15, along with a parent or guardian. Because these hunts are designed to provide an experience to youth who otherwise might not have an opportunity to go on a deer hunt, preference is given to youth and parents with little-to-no hunting experience.
