BKR 4-H Fair Results

The 2022 BKR 4-H Fair was held from July 31st through August 5th. Shooting Sports were held on July 31st at the Sandhills Rod and Gun Club in Ainsworth.

Dove Hunting Season Opens September 1st

With the annual dove season opener on September 1st, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has some reminders for hunters, as well as recommendations for areas to hunt. Doves are abundant statewide and, with generous bag limits, provide excellent wing-shooting opportunities.

Merritt Reservoir SRA to host Full Harvest Moon Hike

Spend some time this summer in Nebraska’s state parks. During September, a variety of events are planned for those interested in history, conservation, nature and just having a good time.

Closures Planned During Park Upgrades in North Central Nebraska

Access to certain areas of parks in north-central Nebraska and the Panhandle will be temporarily closed to make way for improvements. Mike Morava, regional superintendent for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, said each of the projects is being started early enough in the fall to be finished before visitation peaks next year.

Medical Marijuana Initiatives Fail to Make

Secretary of State Bob Evnen announced Monday, August 22nd that two medical marijuana ballot initiatives failed to qualify and will not appear on the November 2022 general election ballot. The Medical Cannabis Patient Protections Initiative and the Medical Cannabis Regulation Initiative failed to meet the Nebraska Constitutional signature requirements.

Artemis 1: A Trip Around the Moon and Back!

NASA’s Artemis 1 mission will launch the first uncrewed flight test of both the Space Launch System (SLS) and Orion spacecraft on a multi-week mission. Launch date is set for August 29th, 2022 with a mission duration of 42 days, 3 hours and 20 minutes.

That question has been asked a lot this year and the answer is the same as it is to most of our gardening problems this year, extreme heat. When the air temperature reaches approximately 94 degrees most plants shut down. They don’t die and don’t actually go dormant, they just stop. The reason this isn’t dormancy is that this circumstance comes and goes with the temperature change. For example, a plant will shut down on an extremely hot day and begin transpiring again when the air temperature drops.
