It has been so terribly hot and humid and Monday temperatures are to be 103 degrees and no rain. Carol Woods did get .30 on Saturday. Carol has been watering trees non-stop to try and save them. The grass is so burnt and brown and like crackers underfoot. We continue to pray for rain!

“The 2012 fire season opened the eyes of a lot of firefighters, fire departments, members of the state and the public to the importance and need of being prepared, staying vigilant, trainings and funding. We don’t have a big fire season every single year, but people realized that when we do, these things are crucial. The 2012 fires were very educational for everyone,” said Justin Nickless, Fire Management Specialist at the Nebraska Forest Service and Assistant Chief for the Ainsworth Volunteer Fire Department.

Ten years after the 2012 fire that burned over 70,000 acres of the Niobrara River Valley north of Ainsworth, there are stark reminders. Taking a drive up into that area, one can still see the aftermath.

Fire Departments Across the State Plus South Dakota Answered the Call for Help

It was an unbelievable sight to see so many volunteer fire departments throughout Nebraska and other states that came to the aid of Brown, Cherry and Keya Paha Fire Departments to help assist with the natural disaster which will now go down in Nebraska history as the “Region 24 Complex Fire”. One hundred and fourteen+ square miles later, the flames were put to rest.
