After 4 1/2 Years... Sand Draw Bridge is Open!

It has only taken 4 1/2 years, but Sand Draw Bridge on Meadville Avenue is now open. Meadville Avenue at Sand Draw has been closed since March 13, 2019 when a large rain washed part of the Meadville Road and damaged the large culverts that ran under Sand Draw.

Accident Report

The Brown County Sheriff’s Department investigated a one-vehicle accident that occurred at 5:53 p.m. on August 16th on Highway 7. Rikus Jansen Van Vuuren of Stapleton was driving a 2003 Chevy Suburban was northbound on Highway 7 when the vehicle ran off the highway on the east side. Van Vuuren over corrected back onto the highway and started to slide across the highway, running off the highway into the west ditch.

Legislative Notes

I was recently contacted by a Nebraska resident who complained about my support for the Convention of States (COS) initiative. They argued the process was illegitimate and dangerous and could lead to a run-away convention wiping out our beloved constitution, etc. Over the years I have devoted a number of these weeklies to this topic, so here goes.

“Brown County Fair - Oh Mother Nature” Boy was it a HOT one! The Brown County Ag Society, once again spent a lot of time putting on the 88th Annual Brown County Fair. One thing that was out of their control was “Mother Nature”.

Looking Beyond the Stars

Looking up in awe at the night sky, the stars and planets pop out as bright points against a dark background. All of the stars that we see are nearby, within our own Milky Way Galaxy. And while the amount of stars visible from a dark sky location seems immense, the actual number is measurable only in the thousands. But what lies between the stars and why can’t we see it? Both the Hubble telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) have revealed that what appears as a dark background, even in our backyard telescopes, is populated with as many galaxies as there are stars in the Milky Way.
