Grassroots government is thriving in Nebraska. There are eight petitions circulating with hopes of making the 2024 General Election ballot, according to Secretary of State Bob Evnen.

Legislative Notes

Recently someone said to me, “Why do you care about the petition referendum to repeal the school choice bill? You don’t have very many private schools in your big rural district!” The answer has two parts. First, I believe the parents of all the school children in Nebraska deserve the same access to the very best education options for their children.

Sheriff’s Report

Brown County Report VIN Inspections The Brown County Sheriff’s Department reports that as of August 1st, 2023, VIN inspections will be done by appointment on Mondays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Accident Report

The Brown County Sheriff’s Department investigated a two vehicle accident on July 7th at 2:05 p.m. at 2nd and Fullerton in Ainsworth. Mickenna Wietzki of Bassett, driving a 2015 Jeep Cherokee was backing out of a parking spot when she backed into a 2004 Lincoln Town Car owned by Dorothy Peters of Ainsworth, who was south bound. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated at $1,500.00 to both vehicles. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The Brown County Sheriff’s Department investigated a two vehicle accident on July 18th at 6:12 p.m. on Highway 183 near mile marker 199. Sadaq Ahmed Mohamud, driving a 2016 Freightliner, was northbound on Highway 183. Mohamud was following a 2005 Dodge Ram and trailer driven by Zoe Poling of Bassett. Poling reported she was making a left hand turn and signaled her turn early due to the semi being right behind her. Poling said as she turned, the semi started to pass on the left and struck her vehicle. Mohamud was issued a citation for following to close and improper passing. Damage to the Freightliner was estimated at $3,000.00 and damage to the Dodge Ram was estimated at $5,000.00. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Fire and rescue personnel responded to a two vehicle accident on South Pine Street in Ainsworth on July 25th at 3:14 p.m. The Brown County Sheriff’s Department reported that Judith Baxter of Ainsworth was southbound on S. Pine St. driving a 2004 Ford Escape and struck a parked 2015 Ford Escape owned by Molly Salzman of Ainsworth. The Baxter vehicle overturned after striking the parked Salzman vehicle and came to rest on its top in the middle of S. Pine St. Both Baxter and her passenger had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Ainsworth Fire Department using specialized equipment. Both occupants of the Baxter vehicle were transported to the Brown County Hospital by the Brown County Ambulance. The Salzman vehicle was unoccupied at the time of the accident. Both vehicles were reported totaled by the Sheriff’s Department.

Work Begins on US-20

Weather permitting, work began Monday, July 31st on US-20, from the N-61junction in Merriman to the Eli Road junction, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Western Engineering Company of Harlan, Iowa has the contract.
