Allen Johnson paid the troops in Vietnam
SPC-5 Allen Johnson served three years in the Army during the Vietnam War. He spent eighteen months in Vietnam. “Where I was stationed, it was just like stateside duty,” recalled Johnson. He was a finance specialist and his unit was responsible for keeping soldiers’ pay records up to date and making sure they got paid every month. Finance units weren’t stationed in combat zones. They were in the rear echelon with the money. The rear echelon is the farthest away from direct contact with the enemy, but it contains important enemy targets during a war, because food, ammunition and other supplies and equipment are located there.
