Funeral services for Elden Carter, Jr. were held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory with Pastor Marcus Ring officiating. Music was provided by the congregation accompanied by Melanie Hannahs, pianist. Danika Jansen was in charge of registration and the family was in charge of flowers. Casket bearers were Chad Carter, Tom Stevicks, Dan Vavra and Moses Morris. Interment was in the Hillview Cemetery in Dallas. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Elden “Sonny” Clarence Carter, Jr. was born January 13, 1945 to Elden C. Carter Sr. and Mary (Lupton) Carter in Gregory. He was the first of five children. Sonny attended rural elementary school and graduated from Gregory High School in 1963. Sonny married Marvel “Bobbie” Schuppan on September 30, 1974. They had three children, Chad, Paige, and Raelynn. Sonny worked for and retired from U.S. West Phone Company for many years. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Council Bluffs, IA. Sonny enjoyed fishing, hunting, and farming in his early years. He enjoyed planting a garden and watching the sunflowers grow. Sonny enjoyed watching football especially the Green Bay Packers and all television sports. On January 20, 2017, Sonny died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 72 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Vicki Mullen; niece Pam Rasmussen; and nephew Scott Mullen. Sonny is survived by his wife Bobbie of 42 years, Council Bluffs, IA; children Chad Carter, Paige Carter (Moses Morris), and Raelynn Jansen; grandchildren Kevin Carter, Robert Carter, Danika Jansen, Trentyn Jansen, Mitchell Jansen, and Kessie Jansen; also three children from a previous marriage, Tammy Calabro, Steve Carter, and Shawn Carter; grandchildren Christopher Calabro, Marissa Calabro, Matthew Carter, Zachery Carter, McKensie Schwager, Kulter Carter, and Zoey Schwager; siblings Sharon (Leonard) Rasmussen, Bob (Jan) Carter, and Deana (Jim) Schultz, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
