Funeral services for Thomas V. Berens, age 88, of Davenport, IA, were held on March 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home in Davenport, IA. Burial was in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military graveside honors. Thomas Vincent Berens was born on July 19, 1928 in Gregory, a son of Vincent and Pauline (Williams) Berens. Tom served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Phyllis Elaine Nygaard on March 22, 1954 in Igloo. They celebrated over 61 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on August 19, 2015. Tom was a munitions explosives specialist with the Department of Defense for 34 years retiring in 1985. His career took their family all over the world, living in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Okinawa, Germany, and Korea, before settling in Davenport in 1978. He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Davenport, IA. Tom enjoyed history, family and sports and in his earlier years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Tom passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus after a brief illness. He is survived by his children and spouses: Dr. Janet (Dr. Matthew) Ehrenberg, Los Angeles, CA, Lana (Raymond) Weik, Lebanon, PA, Thomas Vance (Marie) Berens, Clarksville, TN, Kenneth (Sandra) Berens, Davenport, IA, Jack (Insuk) Berens, Madison, AL, and Gary (Christa) Berens, Eldridge, IA; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother Lawrence (Doris) Berens, Gregory and a sister Mary Ann Berthelson, Sioux Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, grandson, Thomas Berens, and siblings, Rita and Vincent.
