Funeral services for Beatrice Andrews were held on Friday, November 15, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bonesteel City Hall in Bonesteel, SD, with Ken James officiating.
Casket bearers were Tyler Red Buffalo, Justin Red Buffalo, Jerald Red Buffalo, Shane Pickner, Barron Andrews, Colman Caldwell, Julian Red Buffalo and Chase Red Buffalo. Honorary casket bearers were Cayson Andrews, David Primeaux, Dave Coenen, Kevin Kirkpatrick, Opal Stars, Rita Carlson, Winifred Andrews, Wes Andrews, Willard Caldwell, Cameron Caldwell and all of her relatives and friends.
Interment was in the Ponca Creek UCC Cemetery in St. Charles, SD. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Beatrice “Joyce” Andrews was born on April 4, 1938, the seventh child to Mercy (Stone Arrow) Andrews and Jesse Andrews, Sr. at home in Bonesteel, SD on November 11, 2019.
Joyce attended school at Rosebud Boarding School in Mission, SD and Flandreau Indian School.
Joyce spent her childhood years in Bad Nation and Milk’s Camp. She worked at the Hillcrest Inn in Burke, SD for Lyle and Edith Olivier until she met her husband.
Joyce married Steve Red Buffalo in February 1963. To this union seven children were born: Brian (Tammy) of Sioux City, IA, Stephanie of Flandreau, SD, Kevin of Bonesteel, SD, Joy Weigel of Tomah, WI, Stephen Jr. of Sioux City, IA Twila, Sioux Falls, SD, and Stacy (deceased).
Joyce moved to Pierre in August 1981 to live with her brother Jesse and family.
Joyce worked various jobs in motels. In 1985, she began employment at the Pierre Indian Learning Center working with students in grades first through fourth. She worked there until August of 1995.
In 2000, Joyce moved home to Bonesteel, SD, to help care for her older sisters Donna and Josephine and to be near her older brother Hampton.
Joyce passed away at home on November 11, 2019.
She is survived by her children Brian, Stephanie, Kevin, Joy, Steve Jr., Twila and Waylon Gregor; grandchildren Julian, Chase, Avery, Adrian, Damian, Justin, Jerald, Lavonna, Latonya, Tyler Stevie and Precious; sisters Rita Carlson and Winifred Andrews of Chamberlain; brother Jesse Jr. of Sioux Falls, SD; 26 grandsons, 12 granddaughters and 25 great-grandchildren, 12 nieces and four nephews.
Joyce was preceded in death by her youngest son Stacy, grandparents Sarah and Frances Stone Arrow, James and Millie Andrews, parents Jesse Sr. and Mercy Andrews, brothers Conrad, Dana, Ronald, Marvin, Stanford, Wilfred and Hampton, sisters Donna, Margaret, Josephine and Caroline and sister-in-law Helen Andrews.
