Belva Jean Walker
A memorial service was held for Belva Walker at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Roswell, GA, on September 20, 2018. She passed on September 11, 2018, at the age of 89.
Belva Jean Malchow was born on February 25, 1929, to Frank and Ann Weinrich Malchow on their family farm near Gregory. She was baptized and later confirmed in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Gregory. She attended Gregory schools, and graduated high school in 1947. She then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business and economics from Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, IN in 1951.
Belva worked in Chicago, IL, as a bookkeeper at Pierce Electric Co. and Houghton Mifflin. In 1953, she married Charles Walker. They lived in Chicago, IL; New Orleans, LA; Arcadia, CA; Paris, France; Murray Hill, NJ; and Houston, TX. In 2003 they moved to Roswell, GA to be near their children and grandchildren. They were married for 64 years before Charley’s passing in 2017.
She was a member and officer of the American Association of University Women, the Valparaiso University Alumni Guild, and was active in church activities. She enjoyed sewing, and making clothes for her family. She took many sewing classes from the Houston Community College, and traveled to Paris, Thailand, and Hong Kong on study trips.
Belva and Charley spent many years researching their family histories, traveling to libraries and courthouses in the US, England, Scotland, and Germany. They compiled nine thick binders of information, and traced her family history back to Malchow, Germany. Belva continued to visit Gregory every summer as her children grew up.
Belva was preceded in death by her sister Norma Weber, and is survived by her daughter Helen Ann Walker Pruitt and grandson Alec, son Thomas Scott Walker and his wife Annabelle and granddaughter Nicole, and many cousins.
