Evelyn Rose (Simons) Kinzer was born on New Year’s Eve in 1928 to George and Minnie Mae (Archer) Simons of Sparks, NE. She was the second of five children. Evelyn’s independence began at age four when she started school early so her older sister wouldn’t have to go to school alone. At the age of 13, Evelyn graduated from eighth grade and shortly thereafter, she went to live and work full time for neighbors.
In her younger years, Evelyn loved to go to dances in Norden, NE, with her siblings and friends. Her love of dancing never waned. In fact, her love of dancing led her to Wewela where she danced into the arms of her future husband, Ronald Kinzer.
Ronald and Evelyn were married in Gregory on January 9, 1954. After being married, they made their home on the Kinzer family homestead where they raised their two children, Cheryl and Marlin. For 45 years, they operated the farm, raising cattle and hogs and milking cows. The homestead remains in the family and was recognized as a 100 year Tripp County homestead in 2009.
Evelyn was a “Jill of all trades” from sewing to operating farm machinery to engineering and making something out of nothing to maintaining a home.
Ronald and Evelyn moved to Gregory in 2000. In her later years, she took great pride in maintaining her home and yard. She enjoyed seeing and visiting with friends and neighbors at the Colome Legion.
Evelyn passed away at the Gregory Hospital on December 31, 2018, at the age of 90 years.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ronald, and siblings Catherine Billings, Wayne Simons, and Giles Simons.
She is survived by her daughter Cheryl Foster of Rapid City and son Marlin and wife Joni (Olson) Kinzer of Rapid City; four grandchildren Justin and Ivy Foster, Dana Elsasser, Cole and Renae Foster, and Desi and Josh Gaspar; eleven great-grandchildren; and a sister Eunice Delfs.
