Mass of Christian burial for Katherine Hill was held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Gregory with Father Jonathan Dillon and Father Ron Garry officiating.
Music was provided by St. Joseph’s Church choir, accompanied by Katie Opp, pianist and Doris Jelinek, cantor.
Ushers were Steve Millage and Kendrin Millage. Altar servers were Gannon Thomas and Ryler Stevicks.
Pallbearers were Jennifer Millage, Jackie Hamanaka, Jordan Smith, Matthew Garcia, Cameron Hill, Connor Hill, Chelsea Hill and Riley Hill. Honorary pallbearers were all relatives and friends in attendance. Interment was in the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery in Emmet Township. Rush Funeral Home and Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.
Kate was born March 13, 1923, on the family farm north of Burke to Ben and Charlotte Neuroth. Katherine’s siblings include Eileen, Wilfred, Frances, and Warren. In 1936, when Kate was 13, her mother passed away. Her father moved to Seattle, WA, in the 1940s after the kids were out of school. Katherine attended classes through the sixth grade in a one-room rural schoolhouse. She graduated from Burke High School in 1940 along with future husband, Harley Hill.
Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Katherine entered nurse’s training under the Cadet Nurse Corps at St. Vincent’s in Sioux City, IA, graduating as an RN in 1944. Harley was a Navy flight instructor, stationed in Beeville, TX, where they married on September 22, 1944.
After finishing their tour, they returned to Gregory operating a hardware store and managing the Gregory airport. There were the family operations of ranching, farming, and house construction over the years. They had four children.
Katherine returned to nursing and worked at the Rosebud Nursing Home in Gregory for 18 years. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Daughters and was an avid bridge player. In retirement, she enjoyed bridge clubs, reading, crosswords, and family get-togethers. Katherine has resided in Philip since 2006 where Donna resided.
Katherine Hill, age 95, of Philip and formerly Gregory, passed away October 8, 2018, at the Philip Nursing Home.
Katherine is survived by her four children, Rollie (Elle) Hill of Rapid City, Randy (Dolores) Hill of Dallas, TX, Donna (Ray) Smith of Philip, DeAnn Hill of Omaha, NE; ten grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister Frances Hudlicky and sister-in-law Rose Neuroth of Seattle, WA; sister-in-law and best friend Marcie Peterson of California.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and Harley in 2016.
