Funeral services for Kenneth Maas were held on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home in Gregory, SD, with Emmett Kotrba officiating.
Eulogy was Margie’s memories of Kenneth and Diane and Ray Jorgensen were in charge of registration.
Interment was in the Winner City Cemetery in Winner, SD. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
He was born on September 18, 1945 in Gregory, SD. His parents were Art Maas and Ollie (Konop) Maas. He has two older siblings, DuWayne LeRoy Maas and Margie Lee (Maas) Capparelli.
Ken lived on a farm northwest of Winner, SD and started grade school at East Banner Rural School in 1952.
Ken started attending school in Colome, SD and then attended school in Winner, SD until his seventh grade year. He completed grade school in Gregory and graduated from Gregory High School in 1963. Ken briefly attended a trade school in Omaha, NE before he began working a variety of jobs in and out of state to include cement finishing in Washington State and construction in Wyoming.
When Kenny was three years old he started attending Sunday School at the Methodist Church in Winner, SD and then attended the Methodist Church in Colome, SD. Later as an adult, facing his life out of control, he received treatment for addiction to alcohol and with the help of AA was able to quit drinking and smoking and maintained that freedom for the rest of his life, (over 30 years).
While in a relationship with Delores Antelope for approx. 4 ½ yrs. a daughter was born in August 1987. He was delighted by the arrival of his granddaughter, Kaia.
He spent a great deal of time caring for his elderly parents and other neighbors while living at Senior Village. He formed numerous close friendships with other residents. In most recent years he enjoyed eating Kathy Matucha’s cooking at the Dallas Community Center every Tuesday and Thursday. He returned to playing cards at the Friday pitch for the community at the Legion Club and monthly pitch at the Senior Center.
He really enjoyed the cribbage competition with Jenis Audiss, too.
Kenneth Ray Maas passed away in his home at Senior Village in Gregory, SD on Sunday, March 31, 2019 at the age of 73 years old.
Ken is survived by his daughter Christina Antelope and granddaughter, Kaia (age 4) Rapid City, SD; Christina’s sisters, Bernadine Salmon and Bernadette Soesbe, both of Gregory; Bernadine’s daughter, Casey Antelope of Gregory; his brother DuWayne (Sharon) Casper, WY; sister Margie of Gregory; aunt Bonnie (Konop) Fott of Hamill, SD; uncles Stanley Konop of Iona, and Darrell Konop of Winner, SD; nephew Jack B. O’Neill II (Lisa), Hartford, SD, and niece Nicole (O’Neill) Johnson (George) of Gregory, SD; numerous cousins, and many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Art and Ollie, an infant sister Shirley, who was born premature, ten maternal aunts and uncles, seven paternal aunts and uncles.
