Funeral services for Marie Swanson were held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Gregory with Pastor Marcus Ring officiating.
Music was provided by Geoff Smith, soloist, accompanied by Melanie Hannahs, organist.
Leila Adams and Gerrie Soper were in charge of registration and flower attendants were Jeannette Sinkular and Linda Hogrefe. Casket bearers were Jeff Johnson, Gary Clayton, Bruce Adams and Mike Adams.
Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery in Gregory. Kotrba-Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Marie Adeline Martin Swanson was born on September 9, 1931 on a farm in Tripp County to Gus and Ida (Kahler) Martin. She was the third child of seven siblings. Marie attended school in Gregory County. As a child the family moved to California during the Depression Era to seek work.
Upon returning to Gregory County area Marie worked as a waitress Llewellyn Hotel and met her future husband Gifford “Swaney” Swanson. They were married on May 5, 1947 in Winner, where Swaney was employed by the rural electric company. They moved to Gregory when Swaney was employed by Rosebud Electric Cooperative. Marie was the mother three children; Dianna, Dennis and William.
Marie worked in a variety of jobs in Gregory during her lifetime which included retail work at Hogrefe’s Clothing, Skip’s Menswear, Milady’s Shoppe, Gregory Dakota Senior Meals, a hostess at the Homesteader and Wild Wings Hunting Lodge. Marie had a great passion and talent as a self-taught seamstress in both men’s and women’s clothing.
Marie loved to dance and would take any opportunity to attend local events in order to pursue this activity. Later in life, Marie and Swaney attended dance classes together and met numerous friends from around the South Dakota region. Marie also enjoyed hunting and fishing with her family and friends. She was especially proud catching that trophy walleye or shooting the prize wild turkey. She truly enjoyed living her life here on the prairie.
Marie passed away on October 4, 2018, at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory at the age of 87.
Marie is survived by her sons Dennis of Portland, OR, and William (Bill) of Smith Mountain Lake, VA; her siblings Ellen of Kalispell, MT, Raymond of Bloomington, MN, Ruth of Minneapolis, MN, Barbara of Hudson, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband Gifford, daughter Dianna, parents Gus and Ida, and sister Elaine.
