Funeral services for Marlan Green were held on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church in Burke with Pastor David Schmidt officiating.
Casket bearers were Mark Green, Shana Jo Green, Nicole Green, Chase Green, Ashley Green, Addyson Pender and Andrew Pender. Honorary casket bearers were the Burke Volunteer Fire Department and Burke Volunteer Ambulance Department. Music was provided by the Grace Lutheran Church Choir accompanied by Randy Sachtjen. Lisa Green and Jolene Green were in charge of registration. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Burke. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Marlan Everett Green was born on December 25, 1936 in Stuart, NE to Everett and Clara (Nicolaus) Green. He grew up on the farm in the Naper, NE and Herrick areas. He attended grade school at the Goodman School south of Herrick and graduated from Naper High School in May of 1954. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Naper, NE. After high school he worked various jobs with several local farmers and primarily for his grandfather John Nicolaus near Butte, NE. In the fall of 1956 he enlisted in the US Army and was honorably discharged in October of 1959. He married Joan Fuhrer on May 24, 1959. They lived in Fort Huachuca, AZ until his discharge and then worked in the Bristow, NE, Herrick and Burke areas.
He worked for various farmers, for Kallander’s Market in Burke and Cerny Implement in Burke. In June of 1972, Marlan and Joan purchased the Standard Station in Burke which they operated until September 2001 when Marlan was forced to retire after having a stroke which left him unable to work. He lived at home until January 2013 until his health forced him to move the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory. Marlan volunteered as a fireman for the Burke Volunteer Fire Department for over 40 years and the Burke Volunteer Ambulance Service for over 30 years.
He was active in the community, served on the city council, and also served as head usher at Grace Lutheran Church in Burke for an extended period of time. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan. Marlan Green, age 81 of Burke, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018 at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center in Gregory. Marlan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Green of Silver Threads Assisted Living Center in Gregory; children: Steve (Jolene) Green of Springfield, Mike (Lisa) Green of Burke, David Green of Burke and Sheri (Jay) Pender of Johnston, IA; grandchildren: Mark Green, Shana Jo Green, Nicole Green, Chase Green, Ashley Green, Addyson Pender and Andrew Pender; his brother Dennis Green of Rapid City and numerous nieces and nephews. Marlan was preceded in death by his parents, brother Merlin Green and sister-in-law Ellen Green.
