Mavis E. Foyle, 77
Mavis E Foyle was born August 28, 1942 in Folsom, SD to Laurence Fleming and Winifred (Leach) Fleming. She passed away August 20, 2020 at Cherry County Hospital in Valentine.
Mavis was the youngest in the Fleming family of six children. She grew up on the Fleming Ranch located near Scenic, SD. It was a hard life living in a small house with no running water or electrical. At the age of twelve, her father passed away and they moved to Rapid City where she finished school. Her mother remarried and moved to Wisconsin on a dairy farm and she remained there until age 17, when she left home and went to live with her sister in Florida. She had followed her husband in 1976 to Alaska. Their marriage ended in 1978. Mavis met Russell Foyle in 1979 in Fairbanks, AK and they were in married November 1,1980 in North Pole, AK at the Santa Claus House by Mrs. Miller, better known as Mrs. Santa Claus.
Mavis loved flying in their airplane and she and Rusty flew all over Northern Alaska to the Native Villages located in that area where he worked. Mavis also enjoyed flying to their cabin in the mountains where she would spend hours panning for gold, where they spent many a weekend during the summers in Alaska.
They moved from Alaska in 1993 to Port Orchard, WA and lived there many years until Rusty retired in 2008. They moved to South Dakota in 2009, to be closer to family and built a house and lived off Littleburg Road just north of the Nebraska state line. After five years they moved to Valentine. She enjoyed living in town visiting with many old friends and made many new friends. Mavis had worked at Pineview in 1960's. She was a member of Valentine Berean Fellowship Church which she attended and very much enjoyed.
She enjoyed quilting and made quilts for all her girls. She also made many quilts to be auctioned off to raise money for organizations she belonged to and supported with her time and effort. She was a member of Order of Eastern Star and Lady Shriner’s and worked with the Rainbow Girls as Mother Advisor. She was a member of Minnehaha Chapter #246 Order of Eastern Star here in Valentine.
Survivors include husband Russell Foyle of Valentine; daughter Patricia Stowe of Gig Harbor, WA; step daughters: Ivy Tupper, Laura McAdams and Linda Brown and step son Clayton Foyle all of Fairbanks Alaska; and sister Gail (Fleming) Bray of Thomasville, GA.
Mavis was preceded in death by her parents, son Zachery, grandson Joshua, and brothers: Jim Fleming of Las Vegas, NV, Chuck Fleming of Reno, NV and Joe Fleming of Littleburg, SD.
A memorial service will be held at the Valentine Berean Church September 18 at 2:00 p.m. followed by refreshments. Holmes Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
