Funeral services for Sylvia Hausmann were held on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Bonesteel, SD with Father Jonathan Dillon officiating. Jason and Carrie Hausmann were eucharistic ministers. Ava and Emmie Hausmann, Jr. were lectors and Sylvia’s great-grandchildren presented gifts.
Music was provided by the Immaculate Conception Choir and Tim Hausmann, vocalists, accompanied by Roberta Witt, organist. Donna Schmitz and Cheryl Clark were in charge of registration and Tony Koeing and Dan Koenig were ushers.
Casket bearers were Tom and Jan Hausmann, Denny and Nancy Hausmann and Mary and Jim Fernandez.
Burial was in the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bonesteel, SD. Clausen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Sylvia Agnes (Opbroek) Hausmann was born November 30, 1920 to Henry and Margaret (Ritz) Opbroek. She passed away on June 18, 2019.
Sylvia was born on the family farm east of Fairfax, S.D. and was the ninth of fourteen children in Henry and Margaret’s family. As a young girl, she attended Star Valley School and graduated from the eighth grade. In her early adult life, she was employed by Anna Donohue in Bonesteel, where she met Ed who was also employed by the Donohue family. She was also employed by Monsignor Dube in Fairfax as a housekeeper.
On May 1, 1941, she married Edward Hausmann in Fairfax. Due to destruction from a fire at St. Anthony’s Church, Ed and Sylvia were married in a Catholic ceremony at the Congregational Church. They began married life in Bonesteel, SD, and to this union, three children were born: Dennis, Thomas and Mary.
In 1943, Ed was drafted into the Army, and while he was away, Sylvia apprenticed under Lola Fedde and became a beautician. Later, she was employed at Brown’s grocery store and part-time for the Rural Electric Association. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards and was in PTA, Altar Society and Band Parents. When her children were raised and away from home, Sylvia babysat for Jamie and Shawn Schochenmaier.
In 2014, Sylvia moved to Silver Threads independent living facility in Gregory, SD and in 2018 transferred to assisted living.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ed, six sisters, five brothers and one grandchild (Andrew).
She is survived by her children: Denny (Nancy) Hausmann of Broomfield, CO, Tom (Janis) Hausmann of Yankton, SD, and Mary (Jim) Fernandez of Aurora, CO; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; one brother (Henry); one sister (Florence) and numerous nieces, nephews and close friends.
