Marilyn K. Holmberg, 72

Marilyn K. Holmberg was born on May 15, 1951, in Jacksonville, FL, the daughter of Dr. Harry E. and Margaret (Leary) Holmberg. Marilyn passed away peacefully in Ainsworth, NE, on October 28, 2023, at the age of 72.

Marilyn’s father was the Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts at Chadron State College for many years. From an early age, Marilyn also shared her father’s love of music. So much so, it was no surprise to see her graduating from Chadron State College with a degree to teach music. And teach she did. Marilyn was a band director of several Nebraskaarea schools where she touched the lives of more students than could ever be counted. As one former student stated, “She was more than a teacher, she believed in us! She met all students ‘where they were’ and helped us pursue musical excellence. She will be missed”.

Everyone knew Marilyn as an avid photographer (rarely seen without her Nikon) and cat lover. Her impact on students and the communities she served was something special. So much so, that one year the band students she taught in Weeping Water, NE, surprised her with an unexpected present, a St. Bernard dog subsequently named, Molly.

Years later after relocating to Ainsworth, NE to teach, Marilyn had the calling to share her love of music with the greater public. In 1986, she helped to start a brass quintet which played at various community and private events for over 20 years.

Marilyn’s smile, laugh, sense of humor and love of music continues on in all of us.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Harry E. and Margaret (Leary) Holmberg; and brother, Richard Alban.

She is survived by her cousins, Roger (Patricia) Lindskoog, Janice (Edward) Biegert, Diane (Don) Stefanik and a host of other relatives and special friends.

A private inurnment will occur at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron, NE at a later date. Memorials for Marilyn Holmberg may be made to the charity of your choice in her name.
