John C. “Jack” Callaway, 79

A private celebration of life service will be held at a later date for John C. “Jack” Callaway, age 79, of Ainsworth, NE. Jack Callaway died Saturday, September 17, 2022 in the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth. Survivors include his wife, Sue of Ainsworth; children, James (Monique) Callaway of Canada, Melissa Callaway of New York and Travis (significant other - Jolene Thayer) Callaway of Winner, SD; four grandchildren; siblings, Phyllis Jean Calkins of Louisiana, Joan Jackson of Colorado, Con (Betty) Callaway of Phoenix, AZ and Jodie Denny of Wood, SD; along with nieces, nephews and other family members.

Ruth Ann Shaw Kenyon, 88

Ruth Ann Shaw was born on July 1, 1934, in Gregory, SD with her twin brother, Richard, to Orvil Leroy and Rubie Ann (Rose) Shaw. They joined sister Marian, twin brothers John and James and brother Paul, but unfortunately Ruth’s twin passed before the age of one. Ruth graduated from Keya Paha County Public Schools in Springview, NE in June 1948, and she continued her education with correspondence courses from the American School.

Leslie Eugene “Gene” Quinn, 86

Leslie Eugene “Gene” Quinn, 86, of Tampa, FL, died September 10, 2022 at his home. Gene was born June 9, 1936 in Ainsworth, NE to Leslie and Zeta (Jackman) Quinn.

Barbara Morlang, 82

Barbara Elaine (Foster) Morlang, 82, of Rolla, MO, formerly of Ainsworth, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at Presbyterian Manor in Rolla, MO. She went peacefully from this life into the next surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 10th at 10:00 a,m, in the New Apostolic Church, 940 West 1st Street, Ainsworth, NE. Barbara was born in Valentine, NE to William and Winnifred (Read) Foster on September 9th, 1939. She was the 10th of 13 children born to Bill and Winnie. Her childhood was full of family happiness, farm chores and social gatherings.

Donna Lee (Rogers) Keim, 90

Donna Keim was born June 23, 1932 to Harry and Leota (Jarmin) Rogers at Waco, NE and passed away Friday, August 19, 2022 at the Brown County Hospital in Ainsworth. She attended grade school and high school in Brown County, graduating from Ainsworth High School with the class of 1950.

R. Lucy Vargason, 97

R. Lucy (De Wachter) Vargason was born September 12, 1924 in Brussels, Belgium and passed away on August 19, 2022 at Brookstone Acres in Columbus, NE at the age of 97 years, eleven months and seven days.

Ernest “Ernie” L. McBride, 89

Ernest “Ernie” L. McBride, 89 years of age, of Plymouth passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2022. He was born on February 28, 1933 in Milford to Ella Mae Ahrens. Ella Mae and Ernie traveled to German Valley in 1934 to care for Clydie McBride, OH McBride’s wife until she died. He attended grade school at German Valley District 20 through 7th grade before moving to Ainsworth in March of 1947, graduating from Ainsworth High School in 1952. In June of 1947, OH McBride adopted Ernie. On September 3, 1952, Ernie enlisted in the United States Air Force where he spent 3 years in Europe, Germany, France and 11 different countries. He left the states on February 28, 1953 to go overseas and returned to the states on February 15, 1956. Ernie spent 6 months at Forbes Air Base in Topeka, KS and was honorably discharged on September 2, 1956. His Air Force uniform is proudly displayed at the Fairbury Museum. Ernie worked at Boeing in Wichita, KS from October of 1956 to July of 1957 following as a contractor for 6 months. He married Luella Jane Unrein on February 15, 1956 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Wichita, KS. They moved to Wood Lake in April of 1958 and he worked on a ranch. They then moved to Ainsworth where Ernie farmed with his father in the Spring of 1959. He worked at service stations in Wichita, KS and in 1963, went to western Kansas until July of 1967. In April of 1971, Ernie moved to Beatrice and worked for Wilber Oldfather, OK Tire and Bandags in Fairbury until June of 1984. He worked for J & J Hardware for 2 years, K/K Appliance for 2 years, Katz Silage for almost 4 years and retired from ExMark Manufacturing on February 27, 2004 after 6 years. Ernie was a almost 50 year member of Bitting-Norman Post #27 of the American Legion in Beatrice. He enjoyed gardening, mowing, shooting the bull, Beer Thirty and visitors of any kind whether family or friends. Ernie loved his children dearly but his grandchildren could do no wrong. As his sister Beverley would say, “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it”.
