Sometimes moms know best. Jace Robertson claims that the only thing that kept him involved in scouting was his mom, but now that he has completed the requirements and earned the rank of Eagle Scout, he is glad that she did.

Robertson has been in scouts since 2011 and admits that there are actually a lot of things about the boy scouts that he really enjoyed, particularly the camping activities.

He had worked his way through the ranks of Scouts, Tenderfoot, First Class, Second Class, Life, and Star a few years ago. But it wasn’t until Ron Kyburz approached his family about replacing the sign at the entrance to the Pleasant View neighborhood where they lived that he decided he could do the job and make it his project to become an Eagle Scout.

The requirements to become an Eagle Scout included earning 21 merit badges, doing 22 hours of volunteer work, and some paperwork -- lots and lots of paperwork. Then he had to complete everything before his 18th birthday, which was October 4.

Four Eagle Scouts were honored at a ceremony on Sunday, February 21, in Winner. Another Gregory scout, Del Waters, was one of the four recognized. Waters had completed his requirements to be an Eagle Scout last year, but decided to wait until this year to go through the ceremony so that he could be with his friends with whom he had been in scouting for many years. Del’s Eagle Scout project was constructing a bridge for the local Girl Scouts to use in their crossover ceremonies.

Robertson plans to attend Southeast Technical Institute next year to study law enforcement science. His ultimate goal is to become a sheriff.
