The 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month: Armistice Day in Ainsworth
Before Veterans Day was made an official holiday by President Eisenhower in 1954, November 11th was Armistice Day: the day World War I ended when the Allied powers signed a ceasefire agreement with Germany at 11:00 a.m. November 11, 1918. The image above shows the Ainsworth Star-Journal’s announcement three days later.
“The advent of peace means far more than could possibly be manifested at a demonstration like this, for after more than four years the world has stood the burden of the most gigantic struggle in the world’s history,” wrote the Ainsworth Star-Journal in 1918.
