On Thursday, March 11, 2021 Carol Avis McBride, 79, devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed from this world into the loving arms of God surrounded by loved ones.

Carol was born April 6, 1941 at home north of Stuart, NE to James Hoffman and Margaret (Papke) Hoffman. Her love, strong will, and caring spirit showed at a very young age when she would carry or pull her sister Darlene around in the little red wagon, after she contracted Polio. She rode a horse to the country school, but eventually moved to town and graduated from Stuart High School in 1959 where she was a rambunctious and fun-loving student. Carol married Dudley Halligan on September 10, 1961 and raised four children, Scott, Tracy, Carrie and Jim. On June 1, 1992 she married Mort McBride.

Carol was a true original and she lived life to the fullest, always with a smile or her trademark laugh. She brought such joy and laughter to all her family and friends. The stories surrounding Carol and her antics are too numerous to tell, but she touched so many lives that there is no doubt that she will live on through the telling of those stories for generations to come.

Carol was a trail blazer and, in many ways, ahead of her time, including being a successful and enterprising businesswoman. Carol was proud to be one of the first women welders at Daniel’s Manufacturing. She started or owned several businesses including Chantilly Bridal Boutique in Kearney, The Hen House in Ainsworth, along with In Touch Jewelry and Home Health Medical with long-time friend Donna Kegley. Carol was dependable, independent and strong willed, but kind and had a “tell it like it is” attitude. She had a positive outlook on life and deeply held beliefs that shaped her as an individual.

Carol loved her family far and wide with all her heart and was committed to their safety and well-being. She was a loyal and trusted friend with strong and long-term relationships she thoroughly cherished. Carol’s unsurpassed dedication and selflessness to others will always be remembered by those whose lives she touched.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, James and Margaret; sister, Darlene Jaurneg; brothers, James and Robert Hoffman.

She is survived by her husband, Mort McBride; brother, Daniel (Judy) Hoffman; aunt, Avis (Luther) Wilhelmsen; children, Scott (Pam) Halligan, Tracy (Brian) Landis, Carrie (Mark) Gaskins and Jim Halligan; grandchildren, Jimi (Trey) Kerner, Taylor (Tyrel) Entz, Courtney Halligan, Chelsey Halligan, Spencer (Anqi) Landis, Dillon Halligan and Matthew (Alaysha Harris) Landis; and great-grandson and love, Beauden Entz. Also, Mort’s children: Linn (Mike) Baxter, Konnie (Jerry) Schaefer and Joe (Lori) McBride; grandchildren, Dori (Kade) Gracey and children, Nadine (Mark) Prososki and children, Billy Baxter, Stefanie (Keith) Blackwell and children, Jami (Andrew) McDowell and children, Rhe’Ann McBride, Whitley (Kodi) McBride and Kathryn (fiance Nate Key) Schaefer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A public Celebration of Life will be May 29, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at Stuart Cemetery with a dinner following at the Stuart Legion. Holmes Funeral Home of Valentine, NE was entrusted with the arrangements.
