Senators heard arguments to abolish the death penalty at the state level and to allow for execution via nitrogen hypoxia at the Nebraska Capitol on January 31st. In 2009, senators changed Nebraska’s method of execution to lethal injection after electrocution was ruled cruel and unusual punishment.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recently released the Nebraska Vital Statistics Top Causes of Death Dashboard. Vital statistics data are fundamental to public health assessment and planning processes correlating with the overall health of the population. This dashboard includes de-identified aggregate death data between the years 2005-2023 for Nebraska resident deaths. Deaths that occurred within Nebraska to non-Nebraska residents are not included in the data.

The Ainsworth Girls Wrestling Team competed in the Battle Creek Girls Invitational Wrestling Tournament on January 20th and came home with eighth place out of 30 teams. Ainsworth had three girls place first in their weight class, Paisley Hoffman, Jolyn Pozehl and Lynley Leonard.

In a physical game against the North Central Knights on Thursday, January 23rd, the Knights pushed the game into overtime within the last 20 seconds of regular play. The game was neck and neck the last two quarters - but it didn’t start like that.

On Thursday, January 23rd, the Ainsworth Lady Bulldogs basketball team faced the North Central Lady Knights on Ainsworth’s home court. The game kicked off with Ainsworth’s Gracyn Painter winning the tip off and immediately firing off a made three-pointer within the first 10 seconds of the ballgame.
