This week we celebrate “National Agriculture Week.” What better time to say thank you to all the farmers and ranchers, especially in our Sandhills area, and to anyone who has a profession associated with agriculture. Rural communities work hand in hand with their local farmers and ranchers. We couldn’t survive without each other.

Legislative Notes

We have completed all of our committee hearings and we’ve begun full-day debate on the floor. The speaker is focusing the agenda on priority bills from senators, committees and speaker priority bills. We are also working on consent calendar legislation. These are bills that had no opposition in their committee hearing, and were advanced out of committee on a unanimous vote. The process for these bills is accelerated and debate is limited.

Lawmakers Ponder Economic Boom or Fiscal Bubble Is this a financial bubble or an economic boom? That’s the question lawmakers ponder as they make second-year adjustments to the state budget. Analysts seem to think it’s a bubble created by an influx of federal pandemic relief.

Growing a World for Tomorrow: The Jim and Joani Arens Family

Jim and Joani Arens of Ainsworth have been farming in Brown County for over 50 years. They have ten kids, who have given them a current total of 31 grandkids. Many of Jim and Joani’s kids are now in agricultural pursuits including farming, ranching, selling seed and banking. They are listed below:
