That question has been asked a lot this year and the answer is the same as it is to most of our gardening problems this year, extreme heat. When the air temperature reaches approximately 94 degrees most plants shut down. They don’t die and don’t actually go dormant, they just stop. The reason this isn’t dormancy is that this circumstance comes and goes with the temperature change. For example, a plant will shut down on an extremely hot day and begin transpiring again when the air temperature drops.
