Ask a Master Gardener

Question: I am thinking about planting in raised beds this year. Do you have any advice? – Part 2 If your raised beds are around two feet or taller, the bottom six or eight inches can be filled with small brush or twigs and topped with other plant material such as leaves or even kitchen scraps. But not meat, bones, fat or milk products. This will attract garden pests such as house cats or raccoons. The top twelve to eighteen inches can be compost, top soil or a commercial planting mix. Be sure to water the soil before you plant anything to remove any air pockets, you don’t want it to settle after you have plants coming up. All of this material will eventually break down and make great soil for growing crops.
