September is National Voter Registration Month - Here is Why Your Vote Matters

In 2002, Secretaries of State established September as National Voter Registration Month to encourage voter participation and increase awareness of state requirements and deadlines for voting. While your vote may not directly elect the president due to the Electoral College process, it can directly affect state, district, county and local electoral results.

Ask a Master Gardener

Instead of answering a question this week, I would like to acknowledge and thank all of the participants for bringing entries to the Brown County Fair. I am the superintendent of the Agriculture and Horticulture division and we had an amazing turnout.

Kat’s Korner

Over the past month, one has been given the gift of many beautiful sunsets and sunrises. Both the sun and moon have been so bright adding many attributes of color - pink, purple, orange, yellow or all mixed together to make a very stunning picture in the sky.

Legislative Notes

The special session of the legislature for redistricting is here. We begin Monday the 13th. Every ten years after the census we redraw all the political maps, adjusting boundaries based on the new census. Even though our unicameral is called a “non-partisan” body, redistricting always creates the temptation for the Nebraska Legislature to make it a partisan fight. Redistricting in the next couple of weeks is going to be very politically contentious. For me, the fight is about making dead sure that we draw districts that are fair to rural Nebraska. Rural Nebraska is still the economic heart of this state. It is also the most beautiful place to be.
