Buttoning is when cole crops form small or no heads and can be caused by different things such as planting too close together, not enough water, starting with transplants that are too big and of course hot dry conditions. Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage are a few of the cole crops and they grow best at 60 degrees to 68 degrees. The top temperature limit for these crops is 85 degrees. Unfortunately, this year has been a very difficult year for these plants.
