The special session of the legislature for redistricting is here. We begin Monday the 13th. Every ten years after the census we redraw all the political maps, adjusting boundaries based on the new census. Even though our unicameral is called a “non-partisan” body, redistricting always creates the temptation for the Nebraska Legislature to make it a partisan fight. Redistricting in the next couple of weeks is going to be very politically contentious. For me, the fight is about making dead sure that we draw districts that are fair to rural Nebraska. Rural Nebraska is still the economic heart of this state. It is also the most beautiful place to be.

Redistricting Exercise Sure to Cause the Usual Commotion Somebody’s ox is about to get gored. Lawmakers are engaged in the decennial drawing of new maps for legislative and congressional representation as well as the less contentious boundaries for the Nebraska Supreme Court, Public Service Commission, University of Nebraska Board of Regents and the Nebraska State Board of Education.

The Brown County Commissioners held their regular meeting on Tuesday, September 7th at the Brown County Courthouse. Commissioners Dennis Bauer and Reagan Wiebelhaus were present and Buddy Small was absent. Brown County Clerk Travee Hobbs and Brown County Assessor Terri Van Houten were also present.

The Ainsworth Board of Education held a budget hearing and tax request hearing preceding their regular meeting on Monday, September 13th. School board members Jim Arens, Mark Johnson, Frank Beel, Jessica Pozehl, Scott Erthum and Brad Wilkins were present.

“Bulldogs are Fighting for a SWEET Victory” during the 2021 AHS Homecoming Week, September 13th through 17th. Candidates were introduced during Royalty Night on Monday, September 13th.

As we settle into the routine of fall sports rallying up, it is evident that we are all cheering for a Bulldog victory. With this sense of school spirit comes the community-wide rally for a time of year affectionately referred to as ‘Homecoming.’
