Brown County Fair Agriculture & Horticulture Division Superintendent Brenda Goeken stated the entries were down this year due to the weather this summer. There were 54 participants entering 277 exhibits.

In general, yes all vegetable plants are compostable. Most flowers are compostable too but, I never put my iris leaves in my compost because they can carry diseases. I also do not like to put any kind of seed heads in my pile because I do not manage my pile very well, meaning that I do not turn the compost to maintain a high enough temperature to ensure that the seeds are killed. The temperature of a compost pile should be between 130 degrees and 160 degrees, this is accomplished by the green matter heating. It should be turned once or twice a month to ensure that the whole pile is heated and does not have a cool center. This will also keep any odor down by getting oxygen to the center and therefore no methane gas is created.

“Man grows more and more lazy every year. He is living in a machine age, when his walking and his climbing, if not eating, are done for him by some mechanical invention too obvious to be recorded.
