First Organizer of Mother’s Day Later Decried its Commercialization

Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. In the United States, Mother’s Day 2022 will occur on Sunday, May 8th. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and other gifts.

Brown County Farm Bureau Hosts County Commissioner Candidate Forum and Meet & Greet

On Thursday, April 28th, the Brown County Farm Bureau hosted a public forum for Brown County Commissioner Candidates, which followed an all-candidate meet and greet. The event was held in the Ainsworth Community Schools Learning Center, and many county residents were in attendance. Commissioner candidates who participated in the forum were (Left to Right): Rick Irwin, Tom Bejot, Bruce Papstein, William Welke, Jeremiah Dailey and Dennis Bauer. The moderator for the forum was Graig Kinzie, pictured above at far right.

Ainsworth Library Board to Meet The Ainsworth Library Board will hold its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 4th at 5:00 p.m. at the Ainsworth Public Library.

Kat’s Korner

“Community Newspapers” This past week, Rod and I made a trip to Kearney to attend the Nebraska Press Association’s Convention. This was the first convention we have been able to meet in public in two years due to COVID.

Legislative Notes

One of the bills I was able to pass this past session was LB 843. It was an election law bill that had pieces of seven different bills amended into it. Any bill that deals with this subject is one of the hardest things to pass in the Nebraska Legislature. I don’t believe I have ever passed a bill that had this many authors.
